Do Not Pray

Do not pray
like you have been taught

Do not ask
Do not beg
Do not worry or complain
Do not lead others in prayer
Do not sigh in despair

Instead

Look at the stars
imprinted on your eyelids
and marvel at the parallel
distance and nearness of them

Notice the breath
and its dual nature
simultaneously
inside and outside of you

Excitement. Stillness

Falling. Rising

Dwell on the names of the eternal
Creator
Sustainer
Healer
The beginning, middle, and ultimate end

Wealth of humor
Beauty
Equanimity

Balanced between aversion and attachment

Creation and destruction

Picture the vastness of space
The life inside the atom

Remember the attributes of those in the divine presence

Love
Wisdom
Selflessness
Hope
Faith
Goodness
Self-control
Temperance

Sit and examine any of these for awhile

Reflect on things you deem positive
Beautiful
Full of hope
Full of light

Remember the nearness of the infinite

Then

gradually

come back into yourself
and recall your worries, fears, nightmares, regrets

Do they look any different?

Whatever the answer

smile

you lived to see another day
